Authorities are investigating a deadly aviation crash involving a small private jet near Statesville Regional Airport in North Carolina, as questions remain about the passengers on board and the cause of the incident.

A Cessna 550 Citation II aircraft crashed near the airport at approximately 10.30am local time on Tuesday. Preliminary reports indicate the jet went down during an attempted landing, although early emergency radio traffic initially suggested the aircraft may have crashed shortly after takeoff. Officials say the circumstances surrounding the crash are still being assessed.

The aircraft is publicly registered to a company owned by NASCAR driver Greg Biffle, drawing national attention to the incident. However, authorities have not confirmed whether Biffle, his wife Cristina Grossu, or their children were among those on board at the time of the crash.

According to officials, six people were aboard the jet. Five fatalities have been confirmed. The condition of the sixth occupant has not been publicly disclosed. The identities of those involved have not yet been released, pending notification of next of kin.

Emergency services responded immediately after the crash was reported. Fire crews, law enforcement, and medical personnel secured the scene, which remains active as investigators document evidence and examine the wreckage. Witnesses in the area reported seeing smoke rising near the airport shortly after the incident.

A press conference is scheduled for noon, during which authorities are expected to provide updated information, including confirmation of casualties, passenger details, and preliminary findings from the investigation.

The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are expected to lead the investigation. Both agencies will work to determine whether mechanical failure, weather conditions, pilot actions, or other factors contributed to the crash.

Greg Biffle is a well-known figure in American motorsports, with a long career in NASCAR that includes multiple national series championships. News of the aircraft’s registration has prompted widespread concern within the racing community, as fans and colleagues await official confirmation regarding who was on board.

Officials have stressed that information remains limited and have urged the public to avoid speculation as the investigation continues.

This is a developing story, and details may change as authorities release additional information.
